Queer Book Club
Are you looking for a queer space in which you can be yourself and share experiences and stories with others? Are you looking for a place where you can discuss queer literature? Then the queer book club is the place for you.
This Book club will be hosted by Looi van Kessel, assistant professor in literary studies and gender studies at Leiden University, who specializes in LGBTQIA+ literature. The sessions will be held in English.
For our third session we will read…
This session we will read the classic coming of age novel Oranges are not the only fruit by Jeanette Winterson. In this novel, we meet Jeanette, who grows up in a very strict religious environment. Jeanette always imagined herself as a missionary for her religious community, but starts to doubt this life when she falls in love with another girl. The central themes of the novel are the conflicts between religious groups and members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and the pain of losing your family when their religious beliefs cannot accept your sexuality.
